Are You Ready for Palliative Care?

Friday November 2, 2007
Contrary to popular belief, palliative care is not only for the dying. Early intervention with palliative care can help alleviate suffering associated with a serious illness. Early intervention can also reduce the side effects of intensive treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation. Studies have shown that starting palliative care early in the course of an illness can reduce time spent in intensive care, shorten the length of hospitalization, and in some cases positively influence the course of an illness.

If you choose palliative care early on, you and your family will also get support to help you through this difficult time. In addition to treating physical symptoms, the palliative care team can help you and your loved ones with psychological, emotional, and spiritual support.

If you think you or a loved one might be ready to start palliative care, DON'T WAIT!! Get informed about palliative care, then talk to your doctor or doctor's representative about palliative care options. There is no reason to suffer through a serious or life-threatening illness.
