Exercise for Seniors Can Boost Physical Well-Being and Maintain Level of Function

A study published in the Journal of Gerontology: Medical Sciences in November 2006 found that a structured exercise program can help seniors who are sedentary and at risk of losing independant functioning maintain their current activity level. An older persons inability to walk is a major factor in general decline and debility. This study found that older adults who did an exercise program consisting of endurance, strengthening, flexibility and balance training were able to maintain their ability to walk moderate distances.

Ask your doctor or doctors representative for a referral to agencies that provide structured exercise programs for seniors. You can also visit the The National Institute on Aging (NIA) web site at www.nia.nih.gov. for more information.
