Planning Your Own Funeral: Prudent or Paranoid?

From Angela Morrow, RN, About.com GuideFebruary 23, 2008

funeral I've discovered I'm much more comfortable talking about death than most Americans, due in no small part to my line of work. I plan my funeral often. Not on paper, but in my head. My plan changes from time to time; sometimes I want a party with fine wine and good food (two of my favorite things), and other times I want a traditional service with flowers and gospel music. I know for sure that I want to be cremated and I have chosen the spot I would like my ashes scattered.

If this topic ever comes up in a group conversation, some people will chalk me up to paranoid and others will consider me well prepared. Perhaps it a bit of both, but I don't know that it's ever too early to start planning.

Beginning your transition from agressive treatment to palliative care or hospice is a good time to review your will and funeral arrangements or to begin the process of planning if you haven't done so already. There are many things to consider when planning a funeral or memorial service and planning ahead can provide you with peace of mind.

The worst time to start planning a funeral is after a death has already occured. Planning your own well in advance of your death can ensure that your family and friends can focus on their memories of you, rather than on the details of funeral planning.

Angela -

your column is great resource! I want to thank you for your information. Funeral planning can be stressful but if people do it before the need arises it can make it easier for the family and the funeral director.

I dont think it being paranoid, I think it is wanting your wishes met and taking the burden off your family.Plus what people dont realize your also locking todays price in and have payment options, rather than having to pay one big lump sum,Plus there is also insurance if you pass before its payed off,its wrote off. people should ask question and not be afraid of this subject, the better prepared you are the better off your family will be.P.S in some states its illegal to scatter ashes. So ask , check first, shop around, get all the information.I am a manager at our local funeral home/cemetery.I’m open for discution and have helpful information.

Great article with lots of good advice. There is a wonderful end-of-life planning tool called “Memorial Preferences” available online for planning your own funeral/memorial service and organizing your papers.
The website is http://www.funeralplanworkbook.com This is in workbook format and includes an outline to write your own obituary.
