The Decision to Stop Eating and Drinking at the End of Life

The voluntary stopping of eating and drinking is a decision that some people make at the natural end of their lives as a way to hasten the dying process. Some people are honest with family, friends, and health care workers about their decision and others keep it secret, leaving loved ones and medical professionals wondering why they won't eat.

Many wonder if this is a form of suicide. Others wonder if this type of death would increase suffering.
