George Mark Children's House, the United State's first free-standing residential pediatric palliative care facility, will stop providing in-patient medical care. The facility will continue to offer support to families, including bereavement and counseling to patients and their families, but will no longer be able to provide medical care to patients. Of the 60 employees George Mark employed, only 8 will remain on staff.
The facility relies primarily on donor support, which has dropped sharply in this tough economy. Unfortunately, many insurance plans do not offer pediatric palliative care, and those that do seldom cover the full cost of inpatient care. Still other George Mark families have no insurance at all. While continuing with support services, the 8 member staff will be focusing on lobbying California state government for more consistent reimbursement for inpatient pediatric palliative care.
George Mark executives are determined to re-open the inpatient facility by the fall. If you would like to help the children and families who desperately need the services George Mark Children's House provides, you can visit their website to find out how to make a donation.
