About.com Health, the section that includes the About.com Death & Dying site, just received a 2012 eHealthcare Leadership Award for best health/healthcare content in the "Consumer General Health" category. About.com's Health content was selected from more than 1,100 entries that represented 18 industry classifications, from hospitals and health systems to pharmaceutical firms and online health companies. Only Minnesota's Mayo Clinic and managed-healthcare consortium Kaiser Permanente received higher recognition than About.com Health in this competition category.
According to a press release announcing the results issued by Strategic Health Care Communications, 115 judges reviewed all of the entries to determine how the submitted "websites and other digital communications compared with others in their organization's classification. They also reviewed entries based on a proprietary multi-point standard of Internet excellence." The eHealthcare Leadership Awards program was developed and first presented 13 years ago.
