Perhaps a sign that the U.S. economy is indeed improving, the National Retail Federation (NRF) reported this week that adult consumers plan to spend more on gifts for Mother's Day 2013 versus last year.

According to a survey NRF conducted, those 18 years old and older will spend an average of $168.94 on their mothers this year -- an increase of 11% over last year's average of $152.52. Total spending for the Mother's Day holiday is anticipated to hit $20.7 billion this year.

While millions of sons and daughters, as well as husbands and grandchildren, look forward to showering their mothers, wives and grandmothers with flowers and gifts as a sign of their love and appreciation on May 12, the holiday can prove very challenging for those mourning the death of one of these special woman, even many years later. If this Mother's Day will make you or someone you know feel the pain of loss, then I hope you find some comfort in this list of 10 meaningful ways you can keep your mother's memory alive during the holiday.

How did you express your love for your mom on Mother's Day? Please post your thoughts in the comments section below.
