Definition:

Aspiration pneumonia is a respiratory infection that is caused when food or fluids are aspirated - or inhaled - into the lungs. The food or fluid causes infection to develop in the lungs and can prove deadly if not treated.

Aspiration pneumonia is common in individuals with advanced dementia.
