Definition: The act of a physician providing the means for a patient to end his/her own life. It starts with a patient-initiated request, usually followed by counceling, information, and instruction by the physician. The physician may then prescribe the medication that is intended to end the patient's life, but does not otherwise participate in the final act.

PAS is not euthanasia or "mercy killing."
