Definition: Sedation is the inducing of a relaxed, often sleepy state. Sedation is typically achieved as the result of a sedative medication. Examples of sedatives include sleeping medications, anti-anxiety and anti-seizure medications, and pain medications.

Sedation can range from mild, with a gentle calming effect, to a level of unconsciousness, as may happen with palliative sedation and anesthesia.
