Attending Physician

Definition: This doctor is on record as the attending physician for billing purposes. The attending physician may or may not be involved in the patients care.

In hospice care, this doctor would sign the certificate of terminal illness and recieve regular updates from the following physician. The attending and the following physician may be one and the same. In an academic setting or a teaching hospital, the attending physician is responsible for teaching the fellows, residents, and medical students.
