Definition: Respite is defined as a temporary rest period. Respite care is a temporary break for caregivers of the ill or disabled.

Respite care is an important resource for caregivers, who can become easily stressed and suffer from caregiver burnout. Respite care is part of the Medicare Hospice Benefit and is also subsidized by many senior groups as well as private and government agencies.
