Organ and Tissue Donation

It's in My Will
Myth: I don't need to tell my family that I want to be a donor because I have it written in my will.
Fact: By the time your will is read, it will be too late to recover your organs. Telling your family now that you want to be an organ and tissue donor is the best way to ensure that your wishes are carried out.

Saving a Life
Myth: Doctors will not try to save my life if they know I want to be an organ donor.
Fact: When you go to the hospital, doctors focus on saving your life. A person with life-threatening injuries who is also an organ donor will receive as much potentially life-saving medical care as those who are not declared organ donors. Organ donation is only considered if you die and after your family has been consulted.

Brain Death
Myth: Transplant teams decide who is "brain dead."
Fact: In reality, usually two physicians not connected with the case in any way and with no conflicts of interest make the determination of brain death.

Age Limits & Illnesses
Myth: I am too old, with too many medical problems to donate organs and tissues. No one would want my organs.
Fact: People of all ages and medical histories should consider themselves potential donors. Your medical condition at the time of death will determine what organs and tissue can be donated. Organs have been successfully transplanted from donors in their 70's and 80's. The decision to use your organs is based on strict medical criteria, not age. Don't disqualify yourself prematurely.
