Updated: September 24, 2006

Comic Bill Cosby has said of obituaries:
Like everyone else who makes the mistake of getting older, I begin each day with coffee and obituaries.
A. An obituary is a notice or announcement, especially in a newspaper, of a person's death, often with a short account of their life. It is often the first thing many people read in the news each day and may be the last word written about a person's life.

Newspapers regard the obituary notice is a paid listing. Death Notices or Obituary Notices are viewed as advertisements so they are handled by the Classified Advertising Department and require payment to run a "Death Ad."

Obituary information is often provided to the newspaper by the attending mortuary, funeral home of crematorium. This service may be included in the price paid to the mortuary, funeral home or crematorium.
